Summary

HB 218 requires voters to provide a photo id (or a combination of secondary identifications) in addition to a voter registration card in order to vote.

Dissenters argue that there is no evidence of voter impersonation at the polls- the problem this bill aims to address. They claim that the purpose of the bill is to disenfranchise potential Democratic voters. Additionally, civil rights groups, the ARP, and advocates for people with disabilities claim that the bill will disenfrachise their repspective constituents.

The bill passed the House on a 76-69 vote, and awaits debate on the Senate floor. Senate Democrats, however, have a 11 person block on bringing the bill up for debate. (The Senate rules provide that 2/3 of the membership must agree to hear a bill in oder for it to reach the Senate floor.)
