Report on the news last night that there were over 2,000 illegal aliens processed through the Harris County jail since September. That jail was built to house citizens, not foreigners. Build the tents.

Maybe we shouldn't jail people for smoking drugs. This way we don't need to buy new tents!
perhaps the issue is more how it's done

when i sleep in a tent and i call it vacation. i certainly don't want money spent on building bigger and larger permanent prisons/jails. but how are these tents operated? is there anything inherent to the tent situation that is more inhumane than a permanent jail?

They're hotter in the Summer (no A/C, just fans) but the way to avoid the tent jails is not to commit crimes in the first place.
