Summary
HB 307 would amend the Texas Labor Code to add a new Chapter 23 prohibiting employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Furthermore, it would:
-prohibit retaliation against an individual who opposes any act or practice prohibited by the code
-prohibit quotas or preferential treatment based on sexual orientation or gender identity
- not apply to religious organizations, except activities conducted by a relgious organization for profit
Background
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals can legally be denied employment or fired based soley on their sexual orientation or gender identity in the state of Texas. Only in certain jurisdictions, companies or organizations where internal policies have been created are LGBT Texans guaranteed equal protection from employment discrimination.
