SB 175 caps the percent (50%) of college freshmen that are required to be accepted by a state university under the top ten percent rule. Currently, 80% of the incoming freshman class at the University of Texas are accepted under the top ten percent rule.
Currently, All Texas high school students in the top ten percent of their class are guaranteed acceptance to any state school. This policy was implemented as an alternative to implementing a race-based quota system for accepting freshmen into college.
